Background of the Study
Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a major public health concern globally and a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and kidney failure (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension among adults has been on the rise, with inadequate health education being a critical barrier to its effective management (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). Many hypertensive patients lack the necessary knowledge about lifestyle modifications, dietary control, medication adherence, and the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).
Health education has been recognized as an essential intervention in the management of hypertension, helping individuals adopt healthier lifestyles and adhere to medical recommendations. In Kaduna State, where lifestyle-related risk factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and stress contribute to hypertension, proper health education can play a transformative role in improving patient outcomes. This study examines the effect of health education on hypertension management among adults in Kaduna State, evaluating how knowledge influences blood pressure control and overall well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing burden of hypertension in Kaduna State, many patients remain unaware of effective management strategies. Poor knowledge about risk factors, lifestyle modifications, and medication adherence leads to complications, hospitalizations, and increased mortality (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Although health education initiatives exist, their impact on hypertension management has not been adequately assessed.
This study seeks to investigate how health education influences hypertension management among adults in Kaduna State, identifying gaps in knowledge and barriers to effective hypertension control.
